Infant colic symptoms and treatment

Babies are only aware of one way to communicate with their mother when they are not at a level to speak, and that is to cry which usually gets the tending they crave. If your baby has been crying excessively for several hours, is visibly uncomfortable in their surroundings, and has become inconsolable, prospects are they are intestinal colic. Indeed, one of the challenging phases of being a parent is dealing with the baby when he or she shows symptoms of colic — a severe abdominal pain caused by spasm, blockage, or distention of any of the hollow viscera such as the intestines. Intestinal colic is very common in infants that are three weeks to 3 months old and can be very stressful for parents due to the infant's constant crying.

You may observe intestinal colic on babies as young as 3 weeks in the form of stomach pain or recurring spasm. This period of pain usually lasts from three hours up to 12 to 15 hours daily depending on the severity of the case. A baby who is suffering from colic will turn red while convulsing into different positions, such as sudden stretching or stiffening. An infant with these symptoms should be observed carefully because it could have either simple intestinal colic or a serious digestive disorder. The fundamental causes for Intestinal colic in infants are not found until now by anybody whether it be the doctors or the medical world. Even though, there have been many research that points out the possible causes of the said condition that have affected twenty percent of the newborn infants in the planet. It is very feasible that your baby acquired colic because their immune, digestive, and nervous systems are not as well developed and more easily compormised.

Then there are people who believe that certain milk recipes, cow's milk and other such environmental factors cause intestinal colic. One of the most common symptoms of colic in infants is abnormal crying with no apparent reason. According to statistics, every 10th child which is born endures colic which is characterized by an abdominal pain in infants. Intestinal colic attacks can be seen at all times after a meal. The crying can begin and then in can continue for three hours or longer. Symptoms of colic include not just abnormal crying, but also a more irritable disposition and twitching. When crying starts at the same time each day, it can go on and on. It is proposed that you visit your baby's doctor as soon as you notice the signs of colic, to be sure to rule out anything more challenging.
